Satis Dei Syrah Garnacha - Fancy For $9

By: Jon Thorsen Published: September 27, 2019 Last Updated: May 19, 2021

Trader Joe's delivers a solid Spanish blend in an impressive package, the Satis Dei Art Collection Syrah Garnacha.

Satis Dei Syrah Garnacha - Fancy For $

55% Syrah and 45% Garnacha from Tierra de Castilla, Castilla la Mancha, Spain. The wine is aged in barriques for a short time and has 4.7 g/L of residual sugar.

The Satis Dei Syrah Garnacha is available exclusively at Trader Joe's (in the US) and sells for $8.99. According to the back label the wine is bottled by Vina Tridado, which is part of the Reserva de la Tierra group of wineries. It is imported by Latitude Wines.

    From bottle:

A cultural coupage. The best vines, the best grapes and the best new artists. A young wine with an oak touch. Brave and bold. Unique character and image. A platform for new winemakers and artists.

    14% Alcohol

Picking a wine based on the label is always a risky proposition but we really couldn't pass this one up. Not only did it have a nice label, but the bottle itself was very cool with its golf ball like texture. On top of that, Garnacha from Spain is almost always a solid pick so we figured we really couldn't go wrong. Let's see how we fared…

The 2016 Satis Dei Syrah Garnacha begins with pleasing aromas of sweet blackberry, plum, black cherry, bubble gum and lavender. Tasting the soft and smooth medium-bodied wine reveals it be a bit sweet, which I wasn't expecting, but it's quite good and easy to drink. This would make a good wine for fans of the popular sweet red blends who want to branch out into something a bit drier but still fruit forward. And even if you don't like the wine you kind of feel like you got your money's worth just from the fancy bottle. More dark fruit plus touches of chocolate lead into the dry, slightly grippy, medium-long finish.
