Reader favorite Tin Barn Vineyards is back with another single vineyard, perennial Gold Medal winning wine.
Today’s Merlot comes from the acclaimed Pickberry Vineyard on the northeast slope of Sonoma Mountain in Sonoma Valley, California. The wine spends 19 months in 100% neutral French oak. Just a tiny 167 cases were produced.
Regular readers will be most familiar with Tin Barn from their excellent Gilsson Vineyard Zinfandel which we’ve offered a number of times. It’s extremely popular and has been one of our most requested deals. The Merlot (which we first offered with the 2017 vintage) is at least as good as the Zin, and perhaps even better!
This is the real deal right here, 98.3% Merlot with 1.7% Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard that produces some of the best Merlot in California. The judges at the 2024 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition evidently agree, awarding this wine Double Gold.
With its extremely small production (167 cases), this wine is typically only available from the winery at the SRP of $42. Of course you won’t pay anywhere near that through today’s Insider Deal…

Pickberry Vineyard sprawls over 30 rolling acres on the northeast slope of Sonoma Mountain. Planted in the 1980s in volcanic soil, the vines are subject to balmy days and cool nights, our Merlot bears bright notes of black cherry, chocolate and hint of anise, along with a lively acidity that makes the wine especially enticing.
Tin Barn Vineyards celebrates those hidden treasures that lie off map. Our wines highlight the true character of Sonoma County. High atop the ridges of the Sonoma Coast, just off Tin Barn Road, lies a remote plot of Syrah vines. From this fog-enshrouded slope, we sourced grapes for our very first wine and derived inspiration for our name.
In the years since, winemaker Michael Lancaster and his business partners have made a fitting home in our own “tin barn”—a warehouse in rural Sonoma that serves as both cellar space and tasting room. Here, we’ve joined with fellow artisan winemakers to form the collective known as Eighth Street Wineries.

The 2019 Tin Barn Pickberry Vineyard Merlot begins with a strong and simply wonderful aroma of dark fruit, vanilla, spice, cocoa, licorice, leather and more.
It only takes one sip to discover this is pure pleasure. In the mouth you’ll find lots of rich, juicy fruit loaded with all those same touches from the nose – vanilla, spice, cocoa, leather, licorice and more wrapped up in a smooth mouthfeel. If you enjoy wines with a lot of oak influence, this is the one for you! There’s nothing subtle about it including the tannins.
It ends dry, grippy, very long and juicy with lots of lingering flavors.
Quite tasty now, this is likely to improve over the next couple of years and indeed once opened, it gets even better the more time it has to breathe.
