From the bottle:
Originally planted by our founder in 1972, producing great Zinfandel has always been our focus and pride. Grown on the granitic benchland above the Applegate River, this wine has the uplifted fruit, well-formed tannins, and depth of finish that is our signature. This classic Zinfandel captures beautiful floral aromas and raspberry flavors mingling with a pleasant spicy undercurrent of black pepper and subtle Christmas spice.
14.5% Alcohol
One of my favorite aspects of running this site is finding the unexpected and today we have just that. While Oregon may not be the first place you think of for Zinfandel, lo and behold Troon Vineyards has produced an awfully nice one.
The 2014 Troon Red Label Zinfandel begins with a very pleasant aroma of blackberry, black cherry, baking spice and even a bit of citrus. The wine really develops nicely after an hour or so in the glass. It's not a big, over-the-top type of Zin but that doesn't mean it's short on flavor. Tasting shows lots of red fruit with a nice streak of blood orange. All the fruit is wrapped up elegantly in spice, black pepper and chocolate notes that last well into the long, dry finish. This one is just a pleasure to drink!
