Vinho Verde - Your Summertime Solution

By: Jon Thorsen Published: May 13, 2016 Last Updated: October 1, 2021

Vinho Verde - Your Summertime Solution
Four reasons why Vinho Verde owns summer.

The next entry in our series on Vinho Verde focuses on one our favorite topics - summertime.

We started our series with our Get To Know Vinho Verde post and then delved into two of the most important grapes in the region in our Grapes of Vinho Verde feature. Today we're back with four reasons why Vinho Verde is one of our absolute favorite summertime wines.

    Reason #1: Refreshing, refreshing, refreshing.

With it's crisp acidity levels, slightly bubbly nature for many of the wines and low alcohol, this is a wine that offers instant refreshment on a hot summer day without tiring you out or weighing you down. Not to mention the fact that these wines are typically served very cold, which is just what you want when the temperature is soaring. Let's also not forget that the timing is right! Vinho Verde wines are released in their youth just a few months after harvest and fermentation which means summer is prime season for enjoying the latest vintage.

    Reason #2: Versatility

Vinho Verde wines are appropriate for any and all summer occasions; indoors or out. From boating to relaxing on the deck to formal dinner parties to the backyard cookout. Flip flops or closed toed shoes, fancy clothes or shorts, these wines pair with just about any activity. In addition, they are extremely versatile when it comes to food pairing, which leads us to...

Reason #3: Great summer food partners

There's a style of Vinho Verde to match just about any food out there, but they really shine with many of your favorite summer foods. Seafood, sushi, fresh salads (pasta or greens) along with just about anything off the grill. They go especially well with lighter summertime fare like grilled fish, chicken and vegetables. I'm not sure why it is but they also make a natural complement to food you can eat with your hands.

    Reason #4: Value

And last, but certainly not least in our book, is value. Vinho Verde wines represent tremendous value for the price. Mostly under $20, with many selections even at $10 or less, it's hard to find another variety that offers this much value across the board.

What more motivation do you need to check out these wines? Here's a selection of some of recent reviews showcasing many of the different styles of Vinho Verde to get you started on your exploration:

    • Quinta Da Raza Vinho Verde – A Lip Smacking Good Time
    • Casa Do Homem Branco – Vibrant Vinho Verde
    • Arca Nova Vinho Verde Rose – Smells Like Summer
    • Quinta de Gomariz Alvarinho – Quite Pretty
