German wine classifications can be a bit confusing but the Spätlese on the label indicates this is a late harvest wine from fully ripe grapes. This does not necessarily mean that these are sweet wines, it just means that the grapes were fully ripe when picked and therefore have a high level of sugar in them at harvest.
That said, today's wine definitely is on the sweet side with a good amount of residual sugar (59.8 g/L), but it is also beautifully balanced by plenty of refreshing acidity so that it doesn't come off nearly as sweet as you might think. And it's a spectacular, age-worthy example of this type of Riesling. Not many white wines have a drinking window of over 30 years!

The 2016 Weingut Robert Weil Riesling Spätlese is 100% Riesling grown without herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizer from the Rheingau region in Germany. It comes primarily from parcels neighboring the top hillside sites, but also includes a pre-selection of fruit from the prestigious Kiedrich Klosterberg and Gräfenberg vineyards.
The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and has 59.8 g/L of residual sugar although it doesn't taste nearly that sweet thanks to its excellent acidity. Just 750 cases were produced.

Founded in 1875, Weingut Robert Weil is one of the finest producers in the Rheingau region. Wilhelm Weil, the great-grandson of the estate’s founder, carries on the uncompromising, quality-oriented vineyard and cellar practices that have been the hallmark of this elite estate for four generations.
The Rheingau is part of the Rhine valley, near the city of Mainz. Notable for steep, south-facing slopes in a protected valley along a climate-moderating river, this area has the ideal conditions for growing ripe, full-bodied Riesling.
The Estate Spätlese is made with the same exacting standards and meticulous attention to detail as the single vineyard wines, and is designed to showcase Spätlese’s riper, richer style from late-picked fruit. The 2016 Spätlese is rich and concentrated, but not heavy. Superb acidity gives it a refreshing, nearly dry finish.

The 2016 Weingut Robert Weil Riesling Spätlese opens with wonderful aromas of lemon, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, some floral notes, a touch of spice, a touch of smoke and a touch of petrol - there's lots to discover here.
The wine tastes fresh, lively, juicy, rich, zesty and downright delicious. Balanced, complex and lovely it features similar flavors to the nose with lots of honeyed fruit that tends a bit more towards the tropical side of things in the mouth.
Thanks to the acidity the finish feels mostly dry which is pretty impressive with this level of residual sugar. It's also quite long and quite lip-smacking with tart lemon and lime and some lingering salty minerality. Delicious! It's pretty hard to stop sipping this one, especially with just 8% alcohol.
As we noted above, this wine has a drinking window through 2050 which is pretty incredible at this price. It will go great with spicy foods, seafood or especially spicy seafood and was just as good day 2.
