A highly recommended wine from Minnesota? Even better, we found it at Costco! The Winehaven Minnesota Marquette Reserve.
Marquette from Minnesota. The wine was aged in Minnesota oak barrels for 9 months.
The Winehaven Minnesota Marquette Reserve has an SRP of $25 and is available for as low as $11. As we noted above we were delighted to find this local wine on the shelf of our (Minnesota) Costco, but it is also available at other retailers and direct from the winery. Ready to buy? Winehaven is a family owned winery located in the heart of Minnesota's scenic Chisago Lakes Area. The honeybee on Winehaven's label represents the Peterson family's heritage as producers of the region's finest honey. Each wine is crafted in a style that showcases the distinctive character of Winehaven's vineyards, where four generations of Petersons continue to live, work and play.
Made from the winter-hardy Marquette grape, this dry red wine exhibits black currant flavors and aromas integrated with notes of blackberries, pepper and plum. Excellent with beef, pasta or wild game.
13.9% Alcohol
The 2016 Winehaven Minnesota Marquette Reserve opens with a very pleasant aroma of blackberry plus lots of vanilla, cinnamon and other baking spice along with touches of black pepper and plum. The wine tastes surprisingly good with lots of sweet, dark fruit, plenty of vanilla and spice, a smooth mouthfeel, great depth of flavor and good balance. Really my only complaint is that the oak is a bit overdone but otherwise this is a beaut! Regardless of where this is from this is a really nice wine at only $11. It ends dry with lots of lingering dark fruit, vanilla and spice.
As we talked about here, we're increasingly becoming convinced of the viability of hybrid grapes like Marquette. We can't wait what to see what some of these cold climate wineries produce as these vines get some age.
