For those unfamiliar with Clark or our past offers of the Winesmith Cabernet Sauvignon and the Two Jakes Cabernet, Merlot and Petite Sirah you’re in for a real treat today. Not only do we have a wine from the guy who literally wrote the book on winemaking but said wine is also made from the Saint Laurent grape.
This variety, which is one of the parents of Zweigelt and possibly related to Pinot Noir, is often associated with Austria and Germany, but is believed to have originated in France.
Also referred to as St Laurent or Sankt Laurent, it is thought to be named after Saint Laurentius, the patron saint of cooks, as his annual feast day on August 10 happens to coincide with ripening of this early harvest variety. (It’s also apt because this is an extremely food friendly wine.)
With an easy drinking character plus good complexity and good age-ability, it’s a variety with a growing reputation.
There are some really excellent examples being made in the aforementioned regions but due to its success it’s also beginning to be found more widely. For today’s wine Clark was able to procure some really excellent grapes from an experimental planting in the Ricci Vineyard in Carneros.

The Winesmith Saint Laurent comes from the Dale Ricci Vineyard in Carneros, Sonoma. It is aged in neutral French oak barrels for 27 months.

The 2015 Winesmith Saint Laurent begins with a really enticing, intriguing aroma of black cherry and cranberry plus a pleasing herbal, vegetal, smoky, minty note.
Tasting reveals delicious juicy fruit, soft tannins and a smooth and easy mouthfeel in this medium-bodied, quite savory wine. The vegetal notes from the nose don't show up when tasting but the mint and a touch of dried herbs and smoke do. It's rather Cru Beaujolais-like actually and downright delicious, especially after a few hours of air.
It ends dry and long with lingering juicy fruit. This is an excellent way to explore a lesser known variety and quite a refreshing change of pace at only 11.8% alcohol.
