First we’ve got the latest vintage of Wrath’s single vineyard, KW Ranch, Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir.
Equal parts clone 667 and Pommard 4 and aged 10 months in French oak (30% new), only 356 cases of this wine were made. We previously offered the 2018 vintage and it was very well received.
The 2019 we are offering today might be even better, with a 94 point score from Vinous, as well as from us.
The second half of today’s offer (you’ll receive two bottles of both wines) is a new Pinot Noir for Wrath from the Cortada Alta vineyard, which is the highest vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands.
Comprised of two Swiss clones, 20% of the grapes went through whole cluster fermentation and the wine was aged for 12 months in 20% new French oak. A mere 166 cases were produced.
With a big, almost meaty aroma, we loved this wine at least as much as the KW Ranch, scoring it at 94 points as well.
Both wines come from one of the true sweet spots for Pinot Noir, the Santa Lucia Highlands, and they carry the hefty price tag associated with such small production, single vineyard Pinot Noirs from this area — $49.

KW Ranch Pinot Noir 2019 comes from the lower slopes of the Santa Lucia Highlands, along the eastern edge of the appellation. Its lower altitude and facing give its vines a bit more protection from the winds and the resulting fruit has time to develop complex flavors (red licorice, black cherry, vanilla) with classic Santa Lucia Highlands’ bright acidity and an earthy element that knit everything together into a long, finish with lots of dark fruit. Although delicious now, this wine will peak after 2024.
KW Ranch is located in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands, southeast of McIntyre Vineyard and just northwest of Gary’s Vineyard. Planted to both Pinot Noir and Syrah in 2000 by Kirk Williams, the site features a well-exposed, gently-rolling hillside with gravely loam soils. Wines from KW Ranch tend to be intense and highly aromatic.

The 2019 Wrath KW Ranch Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir opens with attention-getting aromas of strawberry, cherry, cola, licorice, cranberry, rhubarb and some lovely, assorted spice notes. It’s a fantastic, harmonious start and it’s especially aromatic after a few hours of air.
The wine tastes smooth, luscious and delicious with all the flavors from the nose combining seamlessly in the mouth. It offers great depth, beautiful structure and wonderful balance. With rich fruit, spice and a touch of earthiness, this one has it all!
It ends dry, quite long and a bit grippy with lingering juicy fruit. Gorgeous! It was just as good on day two.

From the winery:
Cortada Alta is the highest vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. At 1,400 feet, the vines sit above the fog in a notch between two granite outcroppings that collected rich, loam soil. It is planted with two Swiss pinot noir clones, Mariafeld and Wadenswill, that are both known to thrive and ripen in cold climates.
These grapes offer a unique personality that begins with an array of red and black cherry flavors that have an undertone of thyme herb. Flavors are layered with more red fruits, a touch of dried herb and a bright acidity that adds flavor balance to rich dishes of meat or fatty flavors. A very interesting, energetic glass of flavor and acidity.
This is our inaugural vintage of Pinot Noir from Cortada Alta. Hand harvested and hand sorted, the grapes were cold soaked for three days before inoculation. Clonal lots were kept separated in small, open-top bins during fermentation and 20% of the bins went through whole cluster fermentation. The young wine is racked into an assortment of French barrels (20% new) and aged for 12 months before minimal filtration and bottling. Then laid down for another year of bottle aging before being released.

The 2019 Wrath Cortada Alta Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir surprises with a big, meaty aroma for a Pinot Noir and I love it! It is full of dark berry fruit, a little smoked meat and lots of woodsy earthy notes like eucalyptus, wintergreen, dried herbs, tomato plant and much more. This has got layers upon layers!
The wine tastes much like it smells which is a very good thing. It does need some air to open up but then it is doubly delicious. Notes of cola, black tea and much more come out as it has time to breathe.
It ends dry, very long and juicy and was just as good on day 2. This is my kind of Pinot Noir!
