Made from 75 year-old, dry-farmed vines in the Maule Valley of Chile, the Reta Romelio is a field blend of 85% Malbec plus small amounts of Pais, Carignan and Semillon. (Yes, Semillon!) The combination is remarkable.
The wine, named after the Romelio vineyard planted in 1945, spends an incredible 27 months in 228L French oak barrels (3rd & 4th fill) and is expertly made by the highly respected Chilean winemaker Marcelo Retamal, the former winemaker at Viña de Martino. Reta is his family label.
The wine is brought to us by importer Eric Solomon and his European Cellars/Indigo Wines import business. Eric was behind the excellent Calatayud Garnacha that got us hooked on wine, so we’re very excited to welcome him to our Insider Deals. Few winemakers in Chile require less of an introduction than Marcelo Retamal. Throughout his more than two-decade-long career, Reta has been in the vanguard of the qualitative changes in Chilean winemaking. For his restlessly pioneering work, he’s been lauded as one of the most influential winemakers in South America. He not only possesses a keen sense of terruño and how to translate it into his wines, but he’s an effective communicator for his work and the history of winemaking in South America. After 23 years working for Viña De Martino, Reta has “retired” to focus on the wines he makes at Viñedos de Alcohuaz in the Alto Elqui Valley and his personal project, RETA.
RETA was officially born in 2019 with the selection of three vineyard sites that Reta feels personally embody the best qualities in Chilean wine – Chardonnay from Quebrada Seca, Pinot Noir from Talinay, and Romelio, a Malbec-based field-blend from an ancestral vineyard. Each of these vineyards is dry-farmed without chemical inputs. Working the soils is done by horsepower and timed to prevent moisture loss. Harvest is manual, and the fruit is either pressed whole cluster or partially destemmed. Fermentations are spontaneous, and SO2 is only added to the wines after malo has finished or just before bottling. These are some of the most strikingly pure and defy wines we’ve tasted from Chile that demonstrate their Burgundian inspiration while representing the best Chile can offer.
Romelio is a small vineyard located a few kilometers from the Mataquito River on the far western edge of Maule. Close to the Pacific and benefiting from its proximity to the Mataquito River, this is a cool site for Maule with warm, dry conditions throughout the growing season. The age of the vines, which are about 85% Malbec, and the granitic soils make for a more austere and mineral expression of fruit. The wine is named Romelio in honor of the man who planted this vineyard in 1945 and tended it his entire life.
Tasting Notes: Romelio is a field blend that includes a touch of Semillon, contributing a fresh citrus note to the backbone of Malbec, País and Carignan. It’s a riot of vibrant damson and red cherry fruits, and has a refreshing floral element, with rosehip and violets, silky tannins and a chalky texture.
Aromatic with floral and spicy notes, damson, black cherry and blackcurrant. Juicy, pure and precise, with high acidity that makes it vibrant, almost effervescent. It should age nicely.

And now on to our review:
The 2020 Reta Romelio opens with wonderful aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, lots of floral notes, and all kinds of nice little touches – spice, bay leaf and other herbs, tart citrus, hints of vanilla, some iron-like minerality, an earthy note and more. It seems like you find something new every time you sniff.
It’s a fantastic start just be sure to give it a couple hours to breathe to truly experience it at its best.
Tasting the wine reveals similar notes to the nose that are wonderfully balanced and delicious in the mouth. Silky smooth and medium-bodied the wine is layered with deep and harmonious flavors. It also has plenty of structure and acidity.
It ends dry, extremely long with a lingering finish of delicious, juicy fruit and it was just as good on day 2. This field blend of grapes, including a small amount of the white grape Semillon, adds a truly unique and delicious twist to the wine. You don’t want to miss this one.
