Rutherford Ranch returns! And this time they’ve brought with them an unbelievably delicious red blend from their estate Abela Vineyard in the prestigious Rutherford sub-appellation of Napa Valley.
The 2021 Rutherford Ranch Abela Vineyard Red is a beautiful blend of 54% Petit Verdot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot. (We love Napa Petit Verdot, so this is a special treat.) The wine was aged for 18 months in 2/3 French and 1/3 American oak barrels, around 15% of which were new.
This single vineyard, estate red blend is even a step up from the Rutherford Reserve wines, which we most recently offered and so many of you loved. Accordingly this is a very limited production wine, as evidenced by the individually numbered bottles.
Of course, that also means the price is a step up as well, normally retailing for $85 a bottle!

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Rutherford Ranch Abela Vineyard Red opens with very attractive aromas of blackberry, graphite, violets, baking spice, cedar, cocoa, licorice and much more as you swirl and sniff. It’s a fabulous start especially after it has a little air.
Tasting the wine wine reveals that the oak has integrated quite nicely even at this young age and the wine is drinking very harmoniously. It features wonderful balance and structure, great depth, great juicy acidity and a nice bit of tannic grip to go along with all those same flavors from the nose.
It ends very long and lasting on the dry, juicy, slightly chewy and yes, even a bit dusty on the fantastically satisfying finish. It was just as good, if not even slightly better on day 2. This is just a pleasure to drink and another excellent Rutherford Ranch wine, I love it!
I also had chance to taste the 2019 vintage of this wine and as good as the 2021 is right now, the future looks very bright if the 2019 is any indication. Don’t be afraid to stock up on this one.
