Here’s the true story from the back label:

James Stokes was a British sailor who jumped ship in Monterey in 1833, passing himself off as a doctor with stolen medicine. Despite killing a significant number of patients, Stokes was appointed personal physician to Governor Jose Figueroa. Within a year, the governor was dead. Stokes’ sons confronted him and he ingested poison, falling lifeless at their feet. Stokes’ adobe home still stands and a man dressed in 1800s garb is often seen climbing the stairs and passing through the walls. This is Stokes’ Ghost.

Talk about a conversation starter, the label even leaves off the part about the “doctor” becoming Mayor of Monterey​ and his sons being the result of his marriage to the widow of one of his patients!

Stokes’ Ghost from Scheid Family Wines is Petite Sirah from the southern end (Hames Valley) of Monterey. The wine is aged in 40% new American and Hungarian oak for 20 months.

2022 Stokes’ Ghost Petite Sirah

WINEMAKING: The Petite Sirah grapes in this wine were harvested at night in the southernmost reaches of the Monterey appellation, an ideal location for growing this dramatic, heart-stopping variety. Upon arrival to the winery, the grapes were crushed and fermented in small lots to extract the full flavors and tannin structure for which Petite Sirah is so well known. The wine was then pressed and racked at dryness for oak aging.

TASTING NOTES: Deep and brooding, this Petite Sirah is brimming with aromas of blackberry, plum and black cherry. The intense, jammy fruit provides the drama while subtle notes of mocha, violets, and vanilla bring finesse. This wine is full-bodied with structured tannins and a spicy oak finish that lingers on the palate. This rich, lush wine is just what the doctor ordered.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Stokes’ Ghost Petite Sirah pours super dark and inky in the glass, just as you would expect with a good Petite Sirah.

The very enticing aroma is loaded with tons of sweet, dark berry fruit, plenty of spice and vanilla, violets, licorice and more.

This one wakes up your taste buds immediately with a bolt of delicious. It only takes one sip to know that this is truly tasty Petite Sirah, sure to cure whatever ails you. It’s full of rich, juicy, dark fruit with plenty of spice and nice edges of herbs, vanilla and more. It’s also silky smooth.

It ends dry and a bit grippy with a savory finish that hangs around for a very long time, just begging you to take another sip and was similar on day 2.

This is some good medicine and a sure remedy for boring reds. If the good doctor was as inviting and reassuring as this wine, it’s easy to see how he lured so many people into his web! I love it.

This is another great wine to serve with our Coro Salami deal (with free shipping) running this week! In fact, we drank the Stokes’ Ghost with the salami when we were sampling it and it was excellent. You can add the salami on to your order at checkout.
