Trader Joe's Reserve Paso Robles Meritage Review

By: Jon Thorsen Published: July 27, 2023 Last Updated: July 27, 2023

An easy and uncomplicated red blend, we review the Trader Joe's Reserve Paso Robles Meritage Lot 239.

Trader Joe's Reserve Paso Robles Meritage Review

A Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec from Paso Robles, California.

This wine is available exclusively at Trader Joe's and sells for $9.99.

It is vinted and bottled by Healdsburg Wine Cellars which is part of Delicato Family Wines, a very large wine company (top 10) behind some very large brands like Gnarly Head, Bota Box and Noble Vines to name just a few. That likely means this wine either comes from their vast holdings/contracts or that it's simply purchased bulk juice, but neither of those are necessarily a bad thing. Let's check it out.

    From Trader Joe's:

In simplest terms, a Meritage wine is a U.S. version of a traditional Bordeaux. As the step-progeny of those famous French wines, Meritage wines must contain at least two of five “noble” grape varieties, which include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Perhaps now you recognize the heritage of this meritorious wine’s portmanteau?

Speaking of meritorious wines, here’s one for you: Trader Joe’s Reserve Paso Robles Meritage. This is a sturdy and balanced Meritage, with many glorious layers to discover. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec are blended to produce a medium-bodied wine with deep, ruby-red color. Fruity aromas on the nose lead to complex flavors on the palate, including dark berries and moderate oak notes. The discerning taster may even detect notes of chocolate chips on the medium-length finish. A tray of sliced Blueberry Fields Cheese and crackers would easily merit a spot next to this wine.

    13.5% Alcohol

The 2021 Trader Joe's Reserve Paso Robles Meritage Lot 239 opens with a pleasing aroma of dark berries and cedar along with touches of vanilla and cola.

Taking a sip reveals that it could use a bit more depth and complexity but that it is nevertheless quite tasty and easy to drink. Medium-bodied, smooth and balanced, a bit of oaky spice on the mid-palate leads into the dry, grippy, slightly chewy and long finish.

The best way to describe this one is that it is uncomplicated - just get it and enjoy it, no further thinking is required. The taste did drop off a little by day 2 so share it with a friend and finish it off the first night.
