Now, on to the individual reviews. First up is the 2015 Trinitas Old Vine Zinfandel.
This wine is 100% Zinfandel from El Dorado, California. The wine spends 12 months in once used American oak barrels. The vintage we are offering here received 91 points from Wine Enthusiast.
This classic Zinfandel will coat your mouth with rustic flavors of raspberry, cherry and chocolate. Warm days and cool nights allow our grapes to slowly reach optimum maturity while maintaining excellent natural acidity. This, combined with minimal irrigation, results in a balanced wine rich with varietal character.
15.6% Alcohol
The 2015 Trinitas Old Vine Zinfandel begins with an intriguing, rather intoxicating nose of smoky fruit and spice, mint, leather, a bit of bramble and more -- the more you swirl it, the more you find.
The full bodied wine tastes smooth and is full of peppery spice and more smoky dark fruit. This is a really nice example of a flavorful Zin without going over the top. It ends dry, very long and grippy.

The second wine in today's 3 pack is the 2013 Trinitas Old Vine Petite Sirah.
This wine is 100% Petite Sirah from the 100+ year old vines of the Gonsalves Vineyard in Oakley, Contra Costa County, California. The wine spends 18 months in once used American oak barrels. 1,969 cases produced. This vintage received 91 points from Wine Enthusiast.
Our Petite Sirah is dry farmed near the town of Oakley. This bold wine displays aromatics of espresso covered chocolates, blueberries, and toast. Our Petite Sirah has the perfect combination of tannin structure, weight, and balance. Try with short ribs braised in our Petite Sirah with bacon, carrots, and pearl onions.
15.3% Alcohol
The 2013 Trinitas Old Vine Petite Sirah opens with lots of leather on the enticing nose as well as plum, blackberry, spice, vanilla, mocha, a little smoke and more. It's a great start and it gets even better from there.
Tasting the full bodied wine shows lots of dark berry fruit, lots of oaky spice and pepper. It's big but balanced. I wouldn't have guessed it to be 15.6% alcohol. Give this one lots of air as plenty of intriguing secondary notes come out when you do. All three of these wines have some pretty nice aging potential as well.
Firm tannins lead into the dry, long, savory and grippy finish that shows just a touch of heat. This is a great example of one of our favorite varieties.

The third wine in today's 3 pack is our perfect 10, the 2014 Trinitas Old Vine Mataro.
This wine is 100% Mataro (Mourvedre) from 90+ year old vines of the Gonsalves Vineyard in Oakley, Contra Costa County, California. The wine spends 10 months in once used American oak. Just a few hundred cases were produced.
Trinitas chose to use the Portuguese name for Mourvedre (Mataro) since the vineyard is farmed by the Gonsalves family, third generation growers of Portuguese descent.
Mataro, commonly referred to as Mourvedre, is one of our most esoteric varietals. It displays beautiful aromatics of black cherry, cola berry, chocolate, smoke, vanilla, caramel, and cinnamon. The mouth is full of juicy red fruit, and its fleshy core carries through to the long velvety finish. Dry farmed and meticulously grown by our favorite Oakley growers, the Gonsalves family.
15.7% Alcohol
The 2014 Trinitas Old Vine Mataro begins with a very enticing aroma full of deep dark fruit, anise and other spice plus touches of vanilla, toffee and chocolate. A bit raisiny and Port-like on the nose, it fits the Portuguese use of the grape name well.
Tasting the wine reveals rich, decadent fruit flavors filled with lovely spice and more touches of vanilla, toffee and chocolate. Smooth and a bit jammy, this is delicious, full-bodied wine with lots of dark fruit. It's got a lot of alcohol but handles it very well. This is perfect for those cold winter's nights that are coming soon.
The wine ends with a long, dry, satisfying finish. Great on its own, with braised short ribs, as a dessert wine or even with a cigar. Old vines for the win! And as we noted at the beginning, this wine grabbed the second spot on our annual Top 10 Red Wines list.

Also, one last note on all these wines is that the labels list higher alcohol levels than the actuals we included here. For example, the label on the Zinfandel says 16.6%. That number; however, just needs to be within 1 percentage point of the actual (which in this case is 15.6%) so oftentimes wineries don't update to the exact number each vintage as long as it falls within +/- 1%.
