TASTING NOTES: “Lemon zest, grapefruit, and fresh cut grass. Swirling brings honeydew melon, nectarine, and dried mango. Mouthfeel is light bodied, with remarkable sweetness and vibrant acidity. Flavors of stone fruit and citrus dominate the mid-palate, with a very fresh herbaceous aftertaste. The wine finishes very long and angular, with the perfect amount of sweetness to back it up. A delicious Albariño, perfect for a warm day, that you can drink now or in the next 3 years to preserve freshness.”
WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2022 growing season started with very cool weather, with a late snow and a cool spring, putting us two to three weeks behind an average growing season. With a pleasantly warm summer without the huge heat spikes that we saw in the previous few years, the vines were able to ripen long into the growing season, producing wines with beautiful lift and great acidity. Overall, it was a gorgeous vintage for the second year with our new winemaking team. The 2022 Albariño, a first for Desert Wind, was picked in mid September from our sister estate Stoneridge Vineyard in the Royal Slope AVA. The grapes were lightly pressed, then fermented and aged for six months in stainless steel before bottling.
VINEYARD NOTES: The Royal Slope AVA is a recently appointed (2020) wine growing region in central Washington, just north of the Wahluke Slope AVA and our Desert Wind Estate Vineyard. The Royal Slope is known for its south-facing slope, elevation changes, and cooler conditions, especially when compared to the Wahluke Slope. This Albariño was sourced from the famed Stoneridge Vineyard, which is managed by Desert Wind co-owners Lawrence Vineyards, and is distinguished by producing the first 100 point Washington wine. Sustainably farmed since 2018, Stoneridge Vineyard has gravelly and cobbly sandy loam, with large rocks dispersed throughout the topsoil and excellent drainage.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Desert Wind Albarino opens with an aromatic and inviting nose full of lovely grapefruit and lemon zest plus touches of wintergreen, spearmint, honeysuckle and green apple.
The wine is simply lovely to taste as well with lots of rich, delicious fruit similar to the nose, a smooth, full mouthfeel and good acidity. We love that it’s super easy to drink and highly refreshing but that it also features wonderful depth.
It ends with a dry, long, lip-smacking finish just as you would expect for the variety.
We know how much all of you loved our popular Desert Wind Sandstorm Series red wine offers and this white is just as good. Don’t miss it.
