Chile is a stunning country. 2,700 miles long (but only 100 miles wide) of ocean and mountain, this varied terroir is a winemaker's dream and the wines from Chile show it.
As such the country has burst onto the wine scene in the last few years, first with Carménère, the red Bordeaux variety most associated with the country, but as of late with just about every other variety as well from Cabernet to Chardonnay to Syrah to Sauvignon Blanc. An interesting note on Carmenere is that it was once thought to be extinct, wiped out by phylloxera in Europe, but in reality, it was thriving unknowingly in Chile under the guise of Merlot!
It's definitely an exciting time to explore Chilean wine!
