Barbera! The Best Barbera Wines
Beautiful Barbera! If pizza is your thing (and really isn't it everybody's thing?) then Barbera is one of the very best pairings out there.
The examples from Piedmont (Barbera d'Alba and d'Asti) in Italy are probably the most well-known, but parts of California like Amador County are doing amazing things with this variety as well.
Distinctive cherry notes, soft tannins and high acidity are the calling cards of this ancient Italian variety. All of those things help to make it a great pairing not only with pizza but just about anything else covered in tomato sauce.
And while Piedmont usually means big price tags, this grape doesn't have the same recognition as Nebbiolo, which makes it much easier to find great examples under $25.
